A Casual Phoenix by e-carpenter A Casual Phoenix by e-carpenter
I don't care what anyone says.  I like jackets on superheroes.  They're practical.  Here's Rachel Summers during a little fashionable downtime.  Pairs with "The Casual Queen." fav.me/d6zaaju

PS > Copics > Graphite

...leather is a brass bastard to color.  I think it turned out okay.

Thanks a lot.  I try to pay attention to stitching and seams and such.

As you can see, I like jackets as well.  They get a bad rap.

I love this design of Rachel Summers!  Reminds me of an updated John Romita Jr. design!

I took elements from her original hound costume (which is my favorite).

Love Rachel and this casual look is absolutely beautiful. I don't know if they're intentional or not but I like all the nods (the red jacket, phoenix emblem/top, and collar) to her history in her attire. :D

Thanks and it was absolutely intentional.  Rachel's original hound costume is still my favorite, I don't think she's had anything else that's been as iconic or interesting to look at since.

I think Magneto was the only cape I've used for a redesign or original character.

Capes are mainly a DC thing for me I think.  Superman?  He needs a cape.  Same for Batman.  Spawn is his cape as far as the costume is concerned really.  But I've always been more of a Marvel guy so I never really draw them and have to worry about it.

I just can't see Supes working without a cape.  He is "the cape" as far as superhero archetypes go.  I'm still too chicken to attempt a Supes redesign.

Not bad. As to leather on superheroes, it depends on the character. Wolverine? Yes. Superboy? Why not? Black Knight? Eh, not so much.

It doesn't have to be leather per-se.  And I'll be the first to admit that the 90's Avengers era "everyone in a baggy jacket with rolled up sleeves" trend didn't really work, but the costumes weren't built with jackets in mind, they just threw a yellow jacket over top of the Black Knight's armor, or Sue Richards' stripperiffic 90's outfit.

But with a jacket you've got temperature control, you can have it armored, it has pockets so you don't need a confluence of assorted pouches.  They can be loose or tight.

These aren't costumes as much as casual wear though.

Oh, whoops, I misread. Same position on jackets as on leather, though. They can be both cool and functional depending on the character, the type of jacket, and how much thought was put into both.
